Die Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Correspondence Online-Ausgabe (FMB-C) ediert die Gesamtkorrespondenz des Komponisten Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) in Form einer digitalen, wissenschaftlich-kritischen Online-Ausgabe. I am in receipt of your favor of 17 inst and note its contents. I shall be glad to hear from you respecting the 8th work now in embryo, but with permission be it said, do not let it be a concerto or any such such grand affair, as they will never pay to publish here.
The object of the present is to ask you if you have any inclination to write an opera. A friend of mine Mr Bartholomew has written one, calld: “Titania or the Christmas nights Dream” – a sort of sequel to Oberon and I consider it very ably done and well calculated to bring forth fine affects. Mr B intends submitting it to your friend Mr Klingemann & he may probably write to you about it, but if you are inclined to read it, Mr B will copy it out for you. Macready intends to try an Opera Company this coming season and if it succeeds which we do not doubt, there would be a fair chance of getting an Opera of yours done at Drury Lane in the season following but of course all this is mere speculation at present.

September 1841 (Brief gb-1841-09-21-01) an Mendelssohn. Klingemann erhielt ebenfalls ein Exemplar. Klingemann hielt den Text laut seinem Brief an Edward Buxton vom 18. September 1841 (GB-Ob, M.D.M. d. 40/83), den Bartholomew dem seinigen an Mendelssohn vom 21. September 1841 beilegte, als Libretto für ungeeignet. Er erkenne die großen Kräfte des Dichters, vor allem in sehr gelungenen lyrischen Passagen und dem Versbau, jedoch fehle Kontrast, Leidenschaft, die Entwicklung der Charaktere und der Handlung, kurz: dramatisches Interesse. Klingemann schrieb weiter, er halte die Zeit der Märchenoper für vergangen und glaube, Mendelssohn werde nur von einem Libretto mit einfachen Elementen des realen Lebens, die in starkem Konflikt stünden, inspiriert werden. Mendelssohn gegenüber urteilte Klingemann in seinem Brief vom 2. November 1841 sehr knapp, der Operntext sei »simplement gar nichts« (Brief gb-1841-11-02-01).
