72 Northumberland St Edinbh 19 June Dear Sir Your letter of the 3rd of June arrived safely – I had not suffered myself to be sanguine as to the answer, but I could not help feeling grieved at the certainty of your not residing amongst us – I feel much delighted however that I may have some day an opportunity of renewing an acquaintance with the composer of St Paul, and trust that the period may not be very far distant. I am going to be very bold: that is, impudent; I am going to ask a favour. I have a little book in which I keep musical autographs of eminent men: I have extracted a blank page and enclosed it, and perhaps in an idle moment, if any you have, you will indite a note or two, that I may be able to boost of possessing the musical handwriting of the first composer living. I have one of the Sawn Organs and choirs to manage, which I do from the love I bear to the instrument; if then you will write on the aforesaid page, perhaps you will suffer your kindness to carry you a step further and write me a long measure psalm tune … I feel ashamed of my having made or very free, and if you do not grant my request perhaps you will forgive it. And wishing you a long life to exercise your great ability and good health to enjoy the well earned laurels they bring. Believe me to remain respectfully yours Henry E. Dibdin.
