Edinburgh 12th May 1841 41 Hircot thon Dear Sir It is now so many years since I had the honor of meeting with you in Scotland that perhaps you have forgotten me. Since then I have frequently longed to visit Germany in order to renew our acquaintance but business and other ties have hitherto prevented me. You are perhaps aware by this time that our old friend Mr John Thomson died here about a week ago, leaving a young wife and many friends to lament his early loss. Poor fellow! he did not long enjoy his Professorship. As the vacant Chair of music is to be filled up, several of my friends here have advised me to become a Candidate. May I therefore request the favor of a testimonial from you. It would be of the greatest value to me. You may remember that I studied music for some years in Italy, and that you saw some trifles of my composition when you were in Scotland. I have since been writing a good deal, but the métier of teaching, as you may well imagine, interferes considerably with regular study. Hoping that you will pardon the liberty I have taken in making this application to you, I have the honor to remain, with the greatest esteem & respect, Yours obediently Finlay Dun To Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Eqre
