Die Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Correspondence Online-Ausgabe FMB-C ediert die Gesamtkorrespondenz des Komponisten Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy 1809-1847 in Form einer digitalen, wissenschaftlich-kritischen Online-Ausgabe. I send you on the other side the alterations we have made in the adaptation to English word, our friend Mr. Klingemann approves them all but those enclosed in red which we have promised to meet again about tomorrow afternoon – but indeed you are something unreasonable in expecting us to be so very sudden in adaptations of this difficult nature which require many times to return again and again to the expression to get rid of the stifness and not sacrifice the music – and I did not feel at all sure of the adaptation until we had a good opportunity of playing it over with the accompaniment – This I received on the 23d April and I hope you will be good enough to fix with Misrs Breitkopff & Haertel for the 29th May for the day of publication before which day it cannot possible be ready. – They ought to calculate better than to fix an earlyer day. The translation they want they already have with the exception of the alterations on the other side –
I will write to you again on Tuesday about the red ink passages if we decide – We were surprised at your doubt about the word watchman, showing an absurd effect as it occurs often in the Bible. – The whole of that passage is a wonderful improvement to your piece and is full of poetical thought, we are in delight with it – I hope you will like the alterations in the words – particularly in the last Duet. 105.
