It is hardly necessary for me to repeat, that it is not my expectation, nor my wish, that you should trouble yourself to give Charles a course of regular, and Intorious instruction: He should now be considerably advanced in Piano Forte playing, and hints from you should stand in the place of lessons from other men. His disposition, however, seems to be much more for the Organ than for the Piano, and I have much regretted, that, during his sojourn at Cassel, he has had so little practice on the former instrument. Through your kind offices, that deficiency, I trust, will be supplied at Leipsig, and I shall urge him vehemently to avail himself of it.
I suppose, when he arrives, that the weather will be much too cold for any practice in Church; but – as you suggested to his mother – if a Piano can be found with Pedals, he may avail himself of it, to his great advantage.
The difference between the states of Society in Cassel and Leipsig must be very great, and your advice, with regard to the Choice of acquaintance will be of the greatest use to Charles. In you, and Mr David, he will find valuable counsellors, and I trust he will implicitly rely on it.
Permit me to make one correct request. While Charles is with you, let him most carefully practice your compositions, and work them up – so far as he is able – to your own notions of excellence. Do not consider this request as a compliment. I make it in all sincerity; being convinced that I cannot point out a method of greater improvement for my son. After he has been with you for sometime and after you have thoroughly tested his ability, I shall be happy to have your opinion of him: I know that it will be given in perfect sincerity, and I shall receive it in strict confidence. I shall report him to be very diligent with his hi, while he is with you, that he may enjoy the advantage of your invaluable criticisms.
We were highly gratified to hear of your pleasant journey home, and of your finding your dear Wife and Children in good health. Remember us all most kindly to Madame F Mendelssohn. Tell her, that, though a stranger (I hope not always to be one) I am one to whom her happiness is very dear; and that the future has scarcely a more pleasant prospect for me than that of seeing her in England, and in the bosom of my family. To this I will add my prayer that Almighty God may bless her children.
