I certainly understood Mr Chappell to say that he had returned or would return the Ms. I now find upon enquiry that he wanted your biddings to do. I have now him to forward it to you without delay and am still constant to my purpose of endeavouring to alter the present Opera to meet your wishes if possible. If I cannot do so – we only remain where we are and the Opera is still actable in its present shape. My reasons for preferring this mode to write, an entirely new one are two. In the first place I like my subject – and according to your first – and even your second letter – so did you. 2ndly with regard to the treatment of it I cannot hope to be more fortunate in any other Opera, as I did in that instance described to you all the principal situations previously to commencing this one, and received, as I imagined, your full sanction for him. I might therefore again fall into as unfortunate a mistreated and that I could not afford. As it is nearly in details that we differ I am willing to hope that I can reach your views with less trouble than you imagine, at all events we will try one act – and I shall then see better them by any other mode – your real objection.
