I have taken the liberty of addressing the whole of the Music to you, not being certain how far it would be right that the Symphony should be entrusted to any other hands. Should this cause you any unforeseen expenses, you will please to acquaint me of it, and they shall be defrayed by the Society either on your next visit to

I herewith send you the two Overtures by F. Hiller, and the Symphony of Schubert which you were so kind as to lend for the use of the Philharmonic Society, and am devised by the Directors to return you their united thanks to your friendly recollections. I regret to add that they have none of them been performed – One of the Overtures was tried at a Rehearsal and not approved of; the other, that in D Minor, was condemned on looking over the Score – The Symphony of Schubert it was thought necessary to score, and being a very long work, it could not be completed even for the last Concert, but hoping that it may be performed next Season the parts have been detained beyond the time specified in your letter, our Copyist Mr Goodwin having been very unwell, so as to prevent the finishing this Score as soon as he had expected.
I have taken the liberty of addressing the whole of the Music to you, not being certain how far it would be right that the Symphony should be entrusted to any other hands. Should this cause you any unforeseen expenses, you will please to acquaint me of it, and they shall be defrayed by the Society either on your next visit to London or to any person you may appoint.

Wahrscheinlich handelte es sich um Ferdinand Hillers Ouvertüre zu Shakespeares »Was ihr wollt« und seine Ouvertüre Nr. 1 d-Moll zu »Fernando«, op. 32. Eine Ouvertüre zu »Was ihr wollt« von Hiller wurde am 29. Dezember 1837 in einem Konzert des Pianisten Adolf Henselt aufgeführt, die Ouvertüre Nr. 1 op. 32, auch Ouvertüre zum alten Drama Fernando genannt, stand am 21. Februar 1838 im Konzert zugunsten der Armen auf dem Programm. In seinem Brief an Mendelssohn vom 23. Februar 1839 (Brief gb-1839-02-23-01) schrieb Hiller: »Aus der e dur Ouvertüre habe ich mir nie viel gemacht wie Du weißt – ob sie zur Auff. in Lond. geeignet ist mußt Du besser zu beurtheilen wissen als ich. Von der d moll Ouv. magst Du getrost Partitur und Stimmen schicken«.
