I avail myself of Mr Smith’s obliging offer to convoy a letter to Leipzig, to have a little musical chat with you, although the barrenness of the Season just closed affords me little to say – I think the Philharmonic DirectorsPhilharmonic SocietyLondonGroßbritannien have been more than usually inert, which, to say the truth, is quite needless. They have not troubled themselves to produce any thing novel, but contented themselves with living upon their former stock pieces & thin old reputation. This will not do, beyond a certain limit, either for Societies or individuals. Sloth, or even the appearance of it on the part of those who cater for the public, begets a corresponding indifference on the part of the latter; and the effect has been felt this year in a decreased list of Subscribers. I hope the hint will be taken, & that the permanent interests of the Society will not suffer. |2| We can ill afford to have the Philharmonic, which is the only musical performance of a public kind from which I can now derive pleasure.

The object in my writing to you is to prefer a request. Since your last visit to England,your last visit to England – Mendelssohn dirigierte am 20.
