            Berlin April 16th 1839 Dear Sir,
When we were last in Leipzig, I have proposed Clara’s singing at Düsseldorf at the festival, which understanding from you that it tock place in Eastern week, I was reluctantly obliged to decline, thinking as it has formed that we should not have returned from Russia. – But I am this moment returned from a visit to your Mother, & hear that I must have misunderstood you that the meeting does not take place till the 19th of May. Now my dear Sir, as we are on our return to England, we shall be about that period on the Rhine, and at least we will contrive to arrange accordingly, so that if all the arrangements are not finally, & there remains an unoccupied place for a singer on the approaching festival, Clara will be happy to accept an engagement there from the comittee. I understood from you that you cannot offer a large sum to their prima donna, but I am sure you will procure her as much as their funds can offered, & the pleasure she will have in assisting as such a meeting musical treat, as meeting with so many clever & enthusiastic artists & amateurs, will make her quite content with any renumeration that will defray her in expenses at Dusseldorf & any little extra journeying she may have to make – in short she leaves it entirely to yourself & the comittee.
I understand you do the Messiah & your Psalm, in both of it you know she has already sang, & any other pieces, if you will let her know then, she can easily study, both notes & german words. We stay here another fortnight but hope to pass also Leipzig on our way, when I hope to see you, and Mrs Mendelssohn, to whom meanwhile i beg you will present mine & Clara’s kindest remembrances, and with every good wish, believe me to remain
