            London 20th March 1839 My Dear Sir
I presume that shortly after you wrote to me Mr Planché’s Letter must have reached Leipzig as I gave it to Mr Klingemann some time before. I told Mr Planché your feeling about the opera in which I fully concern & he promised me to think well over the Subject whether a Comic Character could be introduced & then to write to you on the Subject. He regretted very much not being able to See you & talk it over & we had hopes from a report originating with Mr Bennet that you would have been able to pay us a Visit this Year, however we have since heard that it will not be convenient to you
My Reason & only reason for not writing was Mr Planché’s undertaking to do it & I thought the correspondence would be more readily carried in between you direct – I paid Mr Planché for the price in its Completion & am therefore entirely in his Hands & pledged to take it beforehand – Under these circumstances I have no alternative but to do the best I can with the piece, if he decline alterations, as he has nothing else in readings to substitute for it – I shall be fully satisfied if you will undertake the Work although I very much regret it is not what we wished to be, therefore placing it entirely at your disposal I remain Dear Sir
