            Dresden March 10th 1839 My dear Sir
I only came here yesterday morning, and in saying this you will I trust understand the delay in the answer to your letter which I found waiting my arrival. We were to have left Berlin on Wednesday last as Mr Shaw’s letter of last Tuesday will have told you, instead of which my child who has been perfectly well since her stay at Berlin, fell so sick with a Cold that Dr Stosch felt sure – it would end in Measles. I was of course obliged to wait for the result and at last on Thursday night decided to come on here for my Concert, and if the Measles should appear to return to Berlin and there I must have remained Thank God she is now much better and will I trust be with us on Wednesday. How very much I regret that it is not in my power to grant you respect.
We are now on our way to Prague & Vienna, and at the last named place I have a Concert fixed for the 7th of April which together with being unfortunately detained here longer than I had intended to remain beares me very little time to do all I ought before we go, added to which I have promised to be in Vienna for the Holy week. And my time been completely at my own disposal, I would have most apuredly come to Leipzig for the occasion of your Charitable Concert, but I have already been too late every where, and as matinees are now fixed for my reception at Prague, and Vienna, I cannot defer="defer" my journey to these places. Pray do not think that I am offering these obstacles as a new excuse to get off, for I assure you I would most cheerfully have come to you but for the impossibility of now altering my plans. I wish you had arranged it so that I could have sang for you while I was there. Pray express my regret to your Colleagues. You will by this time have heard of my success at Berlin, and I am happy to say there is every chance of a full Concert here. Pray give our united best regards to Madame Mendelssohn, and remember as to all who may enquire for us. Accept my best wishes for every blessing this life can afford and believe me
