London July 27. 1838 My Dear Mr Mendelssohn In reply to your very kind and handsome letter I beg to say to you that nothing short of Death or severe accident shall prevent me from shaking hands with you at Leipzig about the middle of October – I have read over your letter several times and assure that I have a heart to appreciate all your kind and generous feelings and if I have not the power to express all to you that I feel, you must give me credit for having it in me – as for you, I believe God has made many worse and few better letter writers. – I go to Cambridge this day and shall remain until the End of September – I have thought it quite proper to answer the very flattering letter from the Concert direction and they will veil my letter/ three days after this – I am about finishing a new Concerto expressly for your Concerto and while is therefore not the same Concerto which I played at Philharmonic but in the same key, and I will also bring my Caprice and a new Ouverture (if possible) – and some little fishes – and so no more of myself I am delighted to know that you are so well and happy with your family, mind and keep so until I see you and as long after as possible If I can execute any commissions for you in London, I hope you will command my Services – While you say to Monicke; that I am rather expecting to hear from him and wish he would write to me once before I come to Leipzig – addressed – Post Office – Cambridge I shall be ever anticipating the pleasure of heaving your new Compositions, the merry fellows and the Violin Quartets . I think with you that the Symphony must be soon begun, and the sooner the better for us – With my very best Compliments to Mrs Mendelssohn and love to your little child believe me ever & ever Yours very obliged True Sterndale Bennett
