Prof. Weber, who is about to return to Germany has kindly offered to take letters for me, and I am glad to avail myself of this opportunity of writing you a few lines, and of sending you a copy of my Father’s Inaugural Lectures, which he lately delivered on his appointment to the Greham Professorship for Music. He is at present absent from town, or I doubt not he would have written to you.
You have perhaps not heard that my cousin Susan is engaged to be married to our excellent friend Dr Rigby, whom by the bye I believe you know, Richard soon followed the example, & is to be married next month. The lady of his choice resides in Cornwall – a niece of Richard’s friend Sir Charles Lennon.
Susan’s marriage is to take place in September at Coed Dhû! –
My friend Handley is now sitting at my elbow; he desires to be remembered to you; & is delighted to hear that you are composing an Opera. He requests me to enclose to you a pamphlet he has just written, on a subject in which he believes you have heretofore taken a deep interest.
I have nothing new to communicate on the state of Music here. The taste of the higher classes is growing more & more corrupted – there is no hope of amendment in that quarter. It is to the middle classes of Society we must look – and there are indications of a growing desire of in struction, & consequently of a better taste, – at least one unstackled by the prejudices & ignorance of fashion. We are very anxious to hear tiding of the appearance of your Opera: any work from the Composer of Paul will be welcomed &, I hope, appreciated, in this country: you will believe that we Taylors, are not amongst the least interested in its appearance & success.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy war mit Planché seit seinem zweiten England-Aufenthalt 1832 persönlich bekannt. Chappell bot Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy dann in seinem Brief gb-1837-10-05-01 vom 5. Oktober 1837 300 Pfund Sterling für die Komposition der Oper an (vgl. fmb-1837-11-17-01, Brief Nr. 1768, Z. 70). In der Folgezeit wurde das Opernlibretto, das die Belagerung von Calais durch Edward III. thematisierte, zwischen Chappell, Planché und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy unter dem Arbeitstitel »The brothers« diskutiert. Gelegentlich wurden auch die Bezeichnungen »Edward III and the Siege of Calais« bzw. »Eduard III. und die Belagerung von Calais« verwendet. Letztlich lehnte Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy den Text ab und zog sich um die Jahreswende 1839/40 von dem Projekt zurück.
