            London. July 2nd 1838. My Dear Mr. Mendelssohn.
I am very unhappy that I hear nothing from my friends in Leipzig and particulary from you – The onlys news that I received of you was from Alfred Novello who told me you were quite well when he saw you in Cologne. This of course I was very happy to hear but would much prefer to hear it from yourself – I very often think of you and wish to be with you again which if God is willing I wish do as soon as possible. The Season in London is nearly over and altogether I consider we have not had a very brillant display of talent. Döhler has been the Lion but I think has not made any great reputation here, the English people are actually getting very fastidious and require, everybody to be quite „perfection“. We have had hundred of clasical Chamber Concerts and scene performences – – The Philharmonic Concerts are now over. At the last, I played a new Concerto (in F. Minor) we had Beethovens Symphony in Bb and your Symphony in a – which I heard for the first time – what a joyons thing it is, and I think the 1st movement quite beautiful and hope you will not alter it – it was well performed and directed by Moscheles – I have given a Concert in London (25 th May) and played Spohr’s Symphony in D minor, your overture (Hebriden) and Webers Preciosa Moscheles played with me the „Hommage à Handel“ I played my Concerts and a new Caprice with accompaniments; which I hope someday to play to you.
 Report saith, that you will come to England next year, I hope so truly and should like to visit Leipzig and afterward come home with you – If I do not come this year I fear not able for many years. Do shall await your advice – Your new Concerto will be played to morrow by Mad. Dulcken at her Concert which she gives with Döhler – &c And now let me ask you seriously, how you are in health? were you now in England you would surely die as the weather is coretchedly dull, the people are all exhausted with the Coronation and cannot recover themselves, in fact London stands now on its head and cannot find its feet – how delightful would it be to get out of the busy metropolis which I hope to do soon & go to Cambridge – where I remain tile October Let me hear from you soon and give me all your good advice – Will you tell Monicke to write to me?, also Schumann? – and now with best Compliments to your good lady & family let me subscribe myself.
