Often has my conscience smote me for not having earlier acknowledged your very kind letter, the Season of London has long since commenced and I have received no intimation of your Coming, I therefore fear I shall not see you this year, Bennett and I often talk of you, and he will be with you in September how much I envy him, you will be pleased to hear the lecture you gave him last year in Birmingham did him much good, he has been extremely attentive to me ever since, nor does he smoke so much, in fact he has been everything you could wish him, poor fellow he is almost harrassed to death. his first Concert takes place Friday next May 25th I hope he will have a, he plays a new Caprice, with Accts the Concerto in F. minor and a duett with Moschelles Homage a Handel, your Overture “Hebriden” and Spohr’s Symphony in minor is to be done, but no Overture of his own, every body are giving Concerts just now. Benedict has brought out a new Opera at Drury Lane “The Gipsey’s Warning” and with little success, Balfe brot out a new one last Evg, with very moderate success, I think Benedict by far the best and no doubt would meet with a better reception in Germany when it would be better understood justice was not done to it here by the singers we were all much pleased to hear the dear Clara’s success, Mrs Alfd Shaw will sure to be a favorite, I hear you are writing an English Opera I wish it was for me, Döehler has made his appearance here he is not equal to Thalberg, he was to have played at the next Philharmonic, The Duke of Cambridge who is the director of the Directors insisted on Herr Pott, consequently they have gone to Pot – do you understand this term?, if not ask an Englishman to explain it, I thank you very much for your kind wishes for my happiness but such as yours I do not enjoy, for I have to inform you my intended marriage is broken off; consequently I cannot tell when it is likely I shall become a benedict, pray present my very kind compliments to your affectionate Lady and I trust she is with yourself and Dear Baby quite well, I hope some day to have the delightful pleasure of seeing Mrs Mendelssohn! with you here, believe me My Dearest Sir Yours ever affectionately

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy war mit Planché seit seinem zweiten England-Aufenthalt 1832 persönlich bekannt. Chappell bot Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy dann in seinem Brief gb-1837-10-05-01 vom 5. Oktober 1837 300 Pfund Sterling für die Komposition der Oper an (vgl. fmb-1837-11-17-01, Brief Nr. 1768, Z. 70). In der Folgezeit wurde das Opernlibretto, das die Belagerung von Calais durch Edward III. thematisierte, zwischen Chappell, Planché und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy unter dem Arbeitstitel »The brothers« diskutiert. Gelegentlich wurden auch die Bezeichnungen »Edward III and the Siege of Calais« bzw. »Eduard III. und die Belagerung von Calais verwendet«).
