            My Dear Mendelssohn
Though I have but a few minutes for writing, I cannot let Mr Klingemann go at Birmingham, without thanking you heartily for the score of your Oratorio, which he kindly brought to me last week.
Of the work itself I cannot now enter into any particular examination – but I hope to do so at a future period. At the whole I shall content myself with saying, that all your real friends may be proud of it, and I trust it will be but the precursor of many other compositions, which shall make still brighter the bright path which you are now treading. I am highly gratified by the kind & flattering manner, in which your present is conveyed: any one might now make himself master of the book – there are few, however, who could obtain such distinction from the Author.
Poor dear Rosen! But I must not trust myself to enter on the subject of his loss. Mr Klingemann will tell you what a deep impression it has made on all here: indeed we were not aware how much we esteemed, and loved, the man till he was taken from us for ever.
But I will glance at another, and more, pleasing subject. I can imagine in what a bustle you now are, and I sincerely hope the result will be satisfactory to you, in the highest degree. But far greater happiness I trust awaits you, on Your return – than any which can arrive from the applause of the “giddy multitude” – That that return may be speedy and prosperous all here join in wishing, with, My Dear Mendelssohn, your faithful
