September 1837 in einer Nachmittagsandacht in der Londoner St. Paul’s Cathedral vor einem großen Publikum u. a. Bachs Präludium und Fuge a-Moll, BWV 543, gespielt. Da es sich um kein ausgewiesenes Konzert handelte, beendete der Kalkant auf Anordnung des Kirchendieners mitten im Stück seine Tätigkeit und verließ die Kirche, so dass der Winddruck in der Orgel nachließ und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy sein Spiel beenden musste (siehe dazu ausführlich Ward Jones, Tagebuch der Hochzeitsreise, S. 117 ff., und The Musical World 7, Nr. 79 vom 15. September 1837, S. 8–10). Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy spielte die 1694–1703 von Bernhard Schmidt (Bernard Smith) gebaute Orgel. Siehe dazu William Hayman Cummings, Father Smith’s Organ in St. Paul’s Cathedral, in: The Musical Times and singing-class circular 21 (1880), S. 121 f., und die Disposition in Thistlethwaite, Mendelssohn und die englische Orgel, S. 183. Am 12. September spielte Mendelssohn in der Londoner Christ Church in der Newgate Street (Christ Church Greyfriars) auf Bitten des dort angestellten Organisten Henry John Gauntlett BWV 543, diesmal ohne Zwischenfälle. Die dort 1690 von Renatus Harris gebaute Orgel war zwischen 1827 und 1831 von Elliot & Hill renoviert und zwischen 1834 und 1837 von William Hill unter anderem durch den Einbau eines Pedals stark modifiziert worden. Das Pedal hatte allerdings nur einen Umfang von 18 Tönen (G–c1), was Mendelssohn die Interpretation der Bach’schen Komposition erschwerte (vgl. die Disposition in Thistlethwaite, Mendelssohn und die englische Orgel, S. 185).
