It always affords me much pleasure to hear from you and I am proud to tell my friends as they drop in that I have received a letter from the great Mendelssohn; I really am afraid to make you an offer for yr manuscripts, altho’ I am very sensible of yr friendship in going me the refusal of them; as difficult music on the continent is so much more valuable to a publisher there, it being more highly appreceated than in England; here the difficult music is only purchased by a few professors who are able to combat with it in order to enhance their own talent: as the sale of this style of music is thus limited I am prevented giving you such a price as your great talent ought to command; having had a little experience with two or three works of your’s I am enabled to say what they have produced and I give you my word of honor as a gentleman that your second Rondeau which Moscheles played at his last concert and which is so fine a composition, has not sold 100 copies – in fact were I not ashamed of the honor of the profession I could say that it has not sold more than 30 – by-the-by several public performers have mentioned they would readily play it if it had an introduction which would further the sale of it very much and this you could oblige me with, with very little trouble when you have occasion to send to me – a couple of pages would be sufficient and I am of opinion that, it required it; but to the negotiation, I wish you had named a price which would have enabled me to have said yes, or no it remains to me to make you an offer – I understand from your letter there are three works, all of difficult character: I therefore propose thirty Guineas, if I have offered you too much you must make it up in the next targam; as not known the extent of the works it is most difficult to form a correct opinion – I am defented to hear there is a probability of your being with us in the ending spring, the profession will welcome you with open arms therefore come soon and stay long – Hoping to hear from you
