            Leipzig 7 Dec. 1840. My dear friend,
Allow me to introduce you a young musician from Hamburgh, Mr. Beit, in whose welfare I feel truly interested although I do not know him personally. My brother Paul has often seen and heard him and spoken so highly of him that I cannot help trespassing on your time and leisure in order to be useful to a friend of my brothers. He writes me that Mr. Beit is a good Quartett player (Violin), that he plays very well at sight and is in short a thorough-bred musician. If you can do anything to make his pursuits in your country meet with success, to render his stay more agreeable, and to relieve him from the many difficulties of a first acquaintance with such a town as yours, you will not only oblige him but myself and my brother most heartily and do us a great service. I believe Mr. Beit, who has been teaching a good deal in Hamburgh, would wish to find what we call a „Wirkungskreis“ with some vocal Society, as their Director, conductor or teacher, and as these Societies are rising and improving so fast in England perhaps might there be an opportunity for him to carry his plans into execution. If you know some people, who have influence with these Societies, and who could be useful to him in that respect, pray introduce him to them, and in short do whatever is in your power to promote his interests, which he will better be able to explain to you than I, who only know them from his letter and that, which I received on his account from my brother.
I do not yet know whether I shall be here next winter, and it is indeed less probable than ever that I shall. But however my plans are not yet settled, and shall not be so before a month or two. Whenever I am certain, be sure that I shall let it be my first business to acquaint you of my future plans, in order to advance the period of our meeting again in old good Germany, as much as possible.
