Leipzig 20th March 1840. Sir I am very happy to learn by your letter of the 6th that you are ready to publish my Trio in your Country, & write these lines to acquaint you that I sent this day a copy of the work to my brothers house at Hamburgh, who will forward it immediately to you by the next Steamboat, so that in about a week I hope it will be in your hands. According to your wish I arranged the Violin part for the Flute also; but I would propose to publish at first only the slow movement and Scherzo for Flute, Bass & Piano perhaps under the title „Andante & Rondo pour Piano, Flute & Basse (tiré de l’oeuvre 49) &c. &c. “ as I am almost sure that these two movements, even separately, will be played by amateurs with pleasure in that shape, while the first and last movement are more difficult, & less fit for a flute arrangement. Of course I leave the decision entirely with you and in the original shape (for Violin &c. ) all the four movements must be published at once of course. Mess. Breitkopf & Härtel who wish to bring it out as soon as possible in this country, beg to fix the 9th of April as day of publication. I answered that it would suit me in case you had no objection, & as they said you were sure of the Copyright as soon as you had a Copy in your hands, & the form of Ewer & Co. being engraved on the German title page, I hope that this day may suit you also. In case it should not, I beg you will write me word immediately. You will find in the parcel the Pianoforte part with the Violin & Violoncello part engraved above it, (in which shape it is to be published here) then the Bass part, and the Violin part arranged by me for Flute. The complete title is written on the Pianoforte part Mr. Moscheles will have the kindness for me to look over the plates before they are published in England. I beg you will give him the enclosed letter, and send him a proof of the work as soon as it is ready, also ask his advice if there should be any dubious notes and in everything concerning the publication. I am, Sir, your obedt Servt Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. P. S. Mess. Schleinitz & David desire many kind regards to you; the sister of the last, Mrs. Dulken wrote from London to enquire for this Trio, as she wanted to perform it there in public; perhaps you will acquaint her, when you have it in your hands. Also Mrs. Schleinitz & David send their best thanks for your kind remembrance. Please to send a Copy of the Trio, when it comes out, to Mr. Moscheles and to Mr. Klingemann, no. 4 Hobart Place, Eaton Square, Pimlico.
