            Leipzig 1st March 1839. My dear Madam,
As a friend of mine, Mr David, leaves this for England today I cannot lose this opportunity of writing a few lines to you. I want to tell you how often and with how great a pleasure we think & speak of you almost every day, how your kindness and friendship have always been a source of true delight & one of the brightest recollections of my past life. I feel very awkward when writing letters & trying to express my feelings, but I know them to be for ever the same notwithstanding the longest silence & the greatest distance. I am certain this is the same with you, for you could not have been so true & constant friends to my father & myself if our feelings were not the same on such subjects. Let me then look forward with delight to the period when I shall meet you again in this life & let me be sure that I shall always find you the same unaltered friends –
I send a little song to your sister Joanna; it is the long promised one & as she wanted religious words I took one of the psalms. I beg she will accept it & take the will for the deed; I never succeed if I want to make a thing very good & that was the case here. However it will, I hope, remind her of me & that is all it was intended for.
I said to the friend who conveys this letter that you would allow him to call & tell you all those news of myself & family that you might like to hear. He is so often in my house here, so well acquainted with my whole family & so distinguished an artist (Violin player) that I wanted him to know my best English friends & I hope you will excuse therefore the liberty I take; he will tell you everything about us better than I should be able to do in writing. – My wife unites in best compliments & wishes to both of you. She daily uses those beautiful presents, which you kindly sent her, with new pleasure & gratitude. She would have liked to say a few words herself to you, but is (I am sorry to say) so little advanced in her English writing that she preferred making me her Secretary & giving her wishes by this medium to you. Farewell my dear Madam; remember me kindly to your sisters Joanna & Mary & always think of me as of a constant & grateful friend.
