            Leipzig the 6 of October. My dear Sir:
I hope you received this Serenade and Allegro giojoso which I promised to you at Cologne. Simrock writes that he sent it more than a month ago, but that he had not yet your answer; I trust it came safely into your hands. Madame Dulcken has written to her brother here expressing her wish to play this here before its being published. As I entertain the greatest regard for her talents and wish accordingly to oblige her as much as I can, and as I am … she will do justice to the composition, I would be glad if you could make your arrangements according to her wishes. I recollect you said you were not on the best termes with her or rather with her husband but if you have not disposed otherwise, I should think it even advantagous to you if it was introduced by her to the public. Pray, write me a few lines answer but soon, soon! you know my corresponding wrath, which seazes me all at once. This Sonata with violine will not be published as I thought before, I shall rather heat my stove with it. But I shall probably publish a Sonata with violoncello in the course of the next months which I shall send to you as you wanted to have something into the bargain, I like some parts in it very much.
As for the money I or my brother at Berlin will draw for it in the course of December which will suite you I hope.
You see I am obliged to dictate these lines instead of writing them myself. I have been confined to bed into my room by a bad attack of the measels and although I am now fast recovering, writing and reading is still my forbidden fruit. Believe me always

S.; Adresse, mehrere Poststempel, Zusatz auf der Adressenseite, schräg neben der Adresse und umrahmt von Ober- und Unterstreichung: »F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy«. – Mehrfacher Textverlust durch beschädigtes Papier. Der Schreiber des Brieftextes ist identisch mit dem Schreiber des Briefs fmb-1838-10-04-02 von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy an William Chappell vom 4. Oktober 1838 (Brief Nr. 2098). Der Zusatz auf der Adressenseite und die Unterschrift unter dem Brief zeigen zwar die charakteristischen Schnörkel und Buchstabenverbindungen von Mendelssohns autographem Namenszug und dieselbe flüssige Schrift wie bei einer eigenhändigen Unterschrift. Aber zumindest die Briefunterschrift weist in Schreibfluss, Zeilenfall und Tintenfarbe keinen Unterschied zum vorausgehenden, nicht autographen (diktierten) Brieftext auf und ist so an den Rand des Briefs gesetzt, dass ein Wechsel des Schreibers nicht wahrscheinlich wirkt. Auch der identisch geschriebene Zusatz auf der Adressenseite dürfte nicht autograph sein.
