You wish me to write down the opinion which I hold of your musical talents & I do it with great and true pleasure, as I may openly express that opinion which indeed is no secret for you[.] Since we first met at Edinburgh I derived much gratification in perusing and thinking of, the Compositions which you then showed me; they led me to believe you a true and thorough musician and that belief has been confirmed by the successive works of yours whic[h] I became acquainted with afterwards. They all exhibit, together with perfect knowledge of the rules of art, a feeling for melody and a natural flow of ideas which I consider as far more important than any other musical qualities since they cannot be acquired by study, & yet will never be sufficient without that theoretical firmness which study alone can give. I always found your works mos[t] correctly written with a natural and original feeling throughout; the Overture which I have now been perusing shows your skill in scoring & as I had always occasion in our conversations to see your enthusias[tic] feeling for our art I can only wish you might a long time proceed in the same path you now tread and I am sure that your friends will always derive true gratification & many treats from your successful musical pursuits.

My dear Sir You wish me to write down the opinion which I hold of your musical talents & I do it with great and true pleasure, as I may openly express that opinion which indeed is no secret for you. Since we first met at Edinburgh I derived much gratification in perusing and thinking of, the Compositions which you then showed me; they led me to believe you a true and thorough musician and that belief has been confirmed by the successive works of yours which I became acquainted with afterwards. They all exhibit, together with perfect knowledge of the rules of art, a feeling for melody and a natural flow of ideas which I consider as far more important than any other musical qualities since they cannot be acquired by study, & yet will never be sufficient without that theoretical firmness which study alone can give. I always found your works most correctly written with a natural and original feeling throughout; the Overture which I have now been perusing shows your skill in scoring & as I had always occasion in our conversations to see your enthusiastic feeling for our art I can only wish you might a long time proceed in the same path you now tread and I am sure that your friends will always derive true gratification & many treats from your successful musical pursuits. I am always truly yoursFelix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Leipzig 10th September 1838.
