In reply to your letter of the 15th which I had the pleasure to receive I beg to say that it would be a real gratification to me to write an Opera, as indeed I have been looking out for a good and inspiring libretto since long. I am sure such a work could not be placed in better hands than Mr Planchés, for whose talents I always felt the highest esteem. As it would, however, not be without some difficulty that I would undertake to write an Opera in a foreign language with which I am not thoroughly acquainted yet, I have some questions which I must beg you to answer before I can positively answer yours, viz: is the proposal, you make, for the next season or for any fixed time, as I should not be able to undertake it if I should not be quite unrestrained about the time of its being finished, and secondly what are the terms that you would offer for such a manuscript in score or arranged? I shall pass through London on Friday night, when I shall only stay a few hours in town, but shall receive any communication you may be pleased to direct to me, at Mr Klingemann’s, no. 4 Hobart Place, Eaton Square, Pimlico; or should you like to speak to me yourself about this subject I beg you will arrange about the place of our conversation with that same gentleman (Mr Klingemann) who will be in town on Friday morning. I leave London by the Dover mail, 12 o’clock at night on Friday and shall afterwards receive your communication if directed to me at Leipzig. I am, Sir

September 1837 im Tagebuch fest, er hätte erst an diesem Tag Chappells Brief vom 15. September 1837 (vgl. Z. 3) erhalten, »der mir eine Oper bestellt, und mich darüber zu sprechen wünscht. Ich antworte er könne mich morgen zwischen 11 und 12 in der Nacht in London sprechen, sonst nicht. Dasselbe antworte ich dem Comité der Gesellschaft von Exeter Hall, die mich zum meeting eingeladen hatten« (Ward Jones, Tagebuch der Hochzeitsreise, S. 126 f.). Mendelssohn irrte in dieser Datumsangabe: Es ist zu berücksichtigen, dass er die Eintragungen in das Tagebuch erst lange Zeit nach seiner England-Reise vornahm - vgl. Kommentar zu Brief Nr. 1633 (fmb-1837-04-26-01), Z. 52 [journal]. Für den 19. September als Schreibedatum des vorliegenden Antwortbriefs an Chappell spricht neben Mendelssohns Datierung, dass er in Z. 14 »I shall pass through London on Friday night [22. September]« und nicht »tomorrow« (wie im Tagebuch angegeben) schrieb; der 21.
