Der Brief muss in der Nacht vom 12. zum 13. September, unmittelbar nach der Aufführung von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys Paulus op. 36 (MWV A 14) in der Londoner Exeter Hall entstanden sein (vgl. Z. 3 f.), denn Mendelssohn reiste am 13. September »Um 8 Uhr 10 Min. von London fort« nach Birmingham (Ward Jones, Tagebuch der Hochzeitsreise, S. 121).
