            My dear Madam, I am to communicate to you the greatest loss which God could have sent to me and my family. We have lost my father; he died on the 19th without previous illness, almost without pain, having spent the evening before with my mother and sister as happy and harmless as he always was with us during the last period of his life; a sudden and quiet end had been one of his chief wishes, and it may afford us some relief to think that this wish has been fulfilled. I heard of it but the day after the event, as I live at Leipzig at present, and I arrived here the 21st where I found all the remaining family in good health and as calm as I could have expected. How we are to go on after such a dreadful loss we do not know; but every one of us will try to continue in his duty, in order to follow the example he gave us, while living with us, and as it certainly would be his wish so, if he was still among us.
He never ceased to feel the gratitude which he expressed to you but lately in a letter, and the friendship, which you and your sisters showed him at London was always a bright subject of his recollections; it was but a short time you saw him, but I think you knew him well enough to conceive what our feelings are. My mother and sisters desire to be remembered to you, and I beg you will think sometimes of those happy days when I was in England with my father; and when my anxiety for him was so often relieved by your presence and the kind attentions which you had for him. He has never forgotten it, and neither shall I and all of us. Farewell, dear Madam, remember me kindly to Miss Alexander and Mrs. Crompton, and be happy.
