Berlin, Jan. 15th 1833My dear Mr. Attwood I wish I could express to you how happy your last letter has made me. It was not only the communication of the meeting of the Philharmonic society, but it was your writing it still at midnight after your return from town, it was that kind and hearty tone, which speaks from every word, in short it was the thought of your continued and unmerited kindness towards me, that made me so happy in reading your letter. I knew already the resolution of the Society by a letter from the Secretary, but I did not know then, what I learnt afterwards, that it is also to you that I am indebted for that resolution, of which you made the motion, which you supported by a speech, and which was quite your own idea. You see, I am aware of all you have done for me, yet I shall not try to thank you for it, as I should not be able to do it as I feel it. I hope to see you in some months and to make music with you; to come down to Norwood to compose in the cottage, to enjoy you & your family more quietly than I did last year, and all that pleasure I shall owe entirely to you. For it is improbable that I should have been able to go to England this year, without a musical object in view. This is the most agreeable I could ever have wished for and it has greatly contributed to deliver me from the bad state of health and of mind, in which I passed the greater part of last year. I shall begin the composition of the Symphony in few days, and think to finish it very soon, as I have thought of it long since, but I do not know whether I shall be able to bring over with me the Overture, which I should like to be a good one. I hope it will not matter if I cannot present it to the Society at the beginning of this season, (at least Mr. Watts told me so) and in case they should want to have it still for this year, there is your cottage, and the good air of Norwood and every thing you want for a good Overture. – I delay’d so long answering your letter because I was excessively hurried by having undertaken to give three concerts in the course of the last months. This gives here almost as much trouble and difficultys to overcome, as it does in your country, and though the receit was to be for a kind of musical fund they have instituted here for the widows and orphans of the musicians in the kings chapel, I had always a great deal to do to make them attend the rehearsals & the concert punctually. It is a great pity to see how great the means are, which we possess here, and how little we effect with them; every man in the orchestra is clever, they like good music and do their utmost to perform it well, and yet their leaders are so very bad that the same Orchestra which played my Overtures wonderfully after a single rehearsal, is not able to perform tolerably an opera of Mozart, or a Symphony of Beethoven. And so it is here in every branch of art and sciences: the leaders do nothing, because they are incapable, and the rest cannot do anything, because they are not well lead. – Pray, pay my compliments to the little player of my MidSummernightsdream, and say that I hope to play it with her, when I come over to England. I shall not have a great deal of new music to show to you, but yet there are some things which I long to hear your opinion of. Pray let me know whether I shall find your composition for the Philharmonic finished this spring, and what kind of piece it is to be? an overture or vocal music, or both? And now I think more and more of the spring I cannot write any longer, I grow impatient, I wish it would be spring already; but it will come and then I hope I shall see you, and so let me finish my letter in a language you understand and say „Auf Wiedersehen. “ Always Yours very truly Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
